Background of the Study
Public health crises, such as disease outbreaks and pandemics, present unique challenges for journalists tasked with providing accurate, timely, and sensitive coverage. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, the role of the media in reporting public health crises is critical for informing the public, combating misinformation, and fostering community resilience. Ethical considerations, including accuracy, respect for privacy, and avoidance of sensationalism, are essential for ensuring responsible reporting. However, journalists often face challenges such as limited access to reliable data, pressure to sensationalize for commercial gain, and the need to balance public interest with individual rights (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2024; Musa, 2023). This study explores the ethical dimensions of reporting public health crises in Makurdi, focusing on the experiences of journalists and the implications for public awareness and trust.
